BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that today’s Bangladesh, freed from the grip of autocracy, was achieved through the sacrifices of countless people. He made the remark on Monday while addressing the bi-annual conference of the party’s Thakurgaon district unit as the chief guest. Rahman joined the event virtually from abroad.
In his speech, he reflected on the long and difficult struggle that has shaped Bangladesh’s political landscape. “The free Bangladesh we see today is the outcome of immense sacrifices made by countless individuals. Their dedication and courage paved the way for the country’s liberation from tyranny,” he stated.
Rahman emphasized that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has always sought to safeguard the rights of the people, particularly their right to speak freely. “BNP has fought to establish people’s right to voice their opinions, because the people are the only true source of political power for the BNP,” he said.
He noted that the party’s strength lies in its connection to ordinary citizens. “The BNP derives its legitimacy and authority not from individuals but from the collective will of the people. This is why our movement has always centered on the demand for justice, democracy, and fundamental freedoms,” Rahman added.
The BNP leader’s comments come at a time when debates over democratic practices, governance, and political freedoms remain at the forefront of national discourse. Addressing party activists and supporters in Thakurgaon, Rahman called for unity and resilience in carrying forward the BNP’s political mission.
While reflecting on the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in the fight against oppression, he urged party members not to lose sight of the ideals that inspired that struggle. “The sacrifices of our predecessors should never be forgotten. It is our duty to continue their mission by upholding democratic values and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard,” he said.
Rahman’s virtual address was met with enthusiasm by BNP leaders and activists at the Thakurgaon conference, who viewed his remarks as a reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to its grassroots base. The event, attended by local leaders and supporters, was seen as a significant occasion to strengthen organizational unity in the district.
Highlighting the central role of the people in shaping the BNP’s political journey, Rahman reiterated that no movement for freedom or democracy can succeed without public participation. “It is the people who give us our mandate. They are the foundation of every struggle we wage and every success we achieve,” he noted.
The conference ended with renewed pledges from local BNP leaders to continue mobilizing in support of the party’s agenda, inspired by Rahman’s call to honor past sacrifices while preparing for the challenges ahead.
