Eleven-year-old third grader’s charred remains confirmed by family at CMH; death toll rises to 31 in Milestone School tragedy.
The body of Raisa Moni, an 11-year-old third-grade student who went missing after a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, has been officially identified. On Tuesday, her father Shahabul Sheikh and uncle Imdadul Sheikh identified her remains at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
Raisa Moni was reported missing following the devastating crash on Monday afternoon that claimed numerous lives and left many injured. Tragically, she did not survive the incident.
Originally from Bajra village in Gopalpur Union of Alfadanga Upazila in Faridpur district, Raisa was the second of three siblings. Her family currently resides in Mirpur, Dhaka, where her father works as a businessman.
Raisa’s cousin Tarikul Sheikh spoke about the identification process, revealing that her body had suffered approximately 80 percent burns, with injuries spanning from her stomach to her head. Despite the severe burns, her father was able to confirm her identity.
Currently, Raisa’s body is at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where DNA samples have been collected. Following the necessary forensic procedures, her remains will be handed over to her family for burial. The family plans to take her body back to their village home for the funeral rites.
The tragic incident unfolded on Monday when an FT-7BGI fighter training aircraft crashed into a building within the Milestone School and College campus in Uttara. The crash caused widespread devastation, killing students, staff, and bystanders, and injuring many more.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), as of Tuesday afternoon, the death toll had risen to 31, with at least 165 people injured. Several others remain unaccounted for, heightening the distress and urgency of ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The loss of young lives like Raisa’s has deeply saddened the nation, sparking calls for thorough investigations into the cause of the crash and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The authorities continue to support the affected families and provide medical treatment to the injured as the country mourns this devastating event.
